Aircraft land and depart into the wind. Headwind is the part of the wind along the runway heading. Crosswind is the part blowing across the pavement. A negative headwind is a tailwind. At Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI/YSWS) the live call is landing and departure 23 with METAR wind 200° @ 4 kt. 23 shows 3.4 kt headwind, 0.0 kt tailwind, and 2.1 kt crosswind from the left. Controllers switch runways when the opposite threshold offers more headwind, or when the crosswind on the runway in use climbs. The component table lists every YSWS threshold so you can see which end holds the headwind and which end is taking the tailwind.
